Temporary Use, Complexity Theory, Dichotomies, Adaptive PlanningAbstract
The utilisation of unoccupied space is becoming increasingly prevalent. This ‘practice’, known as Temporary Use of Space, is evolving and being used in more varied ways. Despite these developments, existent literature is lagging and often frames temporary use in terms of overly narrow dichotomies. While such distinctions may sharpen the debate, they can also obscure the complexity of contemporary dynamics. To address this, we draw on complexity theory to transcend dichotomous phrasings. After examining three common dichotomies, as well as a complexity-informed approach to temporary use, we analyse three emblematic cases from Flanders. Based on this perspective, we argue that dichotomies are insufficient for capturing the changing nature of temporary use. Thereafter, we propose understanding temporary use as an integral component of adaptive planning processes.
